Tips for Following Up from the Spring Career Fair

February 27, 2012

Here are a few reminders, ideas and suggestions for following up with employers from the Career Fair last week:

• Visit the company or organizations website for additional information. Apply online to companies that indicated this as your next step in their application process or follow the instructions you were provided in order to indicate your interest.
• Promptly follow up with recruiters representing organizations of interest to you. Send a short thank you note (email is acceptable, or regular mail) to the recruiters. Use this opportunity to thank the recruiters for their time and to re-affirm your interest in their organization.
• Stay informed. Know what the next steps are to earn the position you seek. Keep on top of all communication with employers and follow up with them by the deadlines indicated.
• Avoid letting too much time lapse in between communications – but don’t confuse persistence with pushiness.
• Give them ample time to get back in touch with you. Sometimes recruiters are on the road longer than anticipated and cannot follow up with you exactly as they had intended. However, if you haven’t heard anything by a week after the recruiter indicated you would be contacted, follow up with them.
• Stay connected to future workshops, employer and career related opportunities with CISTERNonline, the Career Center website and our Events Calendar.
• Make sure to keep checking CISTERNonline to see if employers post any future positions or openings.
• Make sure to schedule an appointment with a Career Center counselor if you need further assistance.

These are just a few ideas the Career Center suggests. We hope you enjoyed the fair and please stop by the Career Center if we can be of any assistance in your future.

SPRING 2012 CAREER FAIR – HOW TO PREPARE & WHAT TO EXPECT

February 12, 2012

Spring 2012 Career Fair
Wednesday, February 22, 2012
12:00 – 3:30 pm
Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC
*Open to students and alumni of The College of Charleston & The Citadel

The day is finally approaching. After four (or five) years, you are now ready to go into the world of professional employment. But where will you find that wonderful new career? One choice is at the 2012 Spring Career Fair. There will be over 70 different employers and organizations lined up to talk to you about possible futures with them.

You can go to the Career Center’s website to find more information about the Career Fair, like who is attending and what they are seeking. One thing to remember about the Career Fair is to visit as many employers as possible. Maybe you feel pretty confident that you want to work with _______ but have you also thought about _______? Never pigeon hole yourself into one job or place to work without looking at all the different options.

Here a few suggestions to follow when preparing for and coming to the Career Fair:

1. Do your research. Look at the different companies coming to the Career Fair on our website and investigate them. What do they do? Where are they located? Are you interested in them?

2. Prepare your resume and bring at least 15-20 copies. By now you should have a well written resume that highlights your experience and achievements. If you do not—write one! Please bring it by the Career Center for the Career Advisor to look at. We love looking at resumes and will enjoy helping you make yours perfect.

*Note: We have Drop-In Hours every weekday afternoon from 1:00-4:00pm. No appointment is required, and this is the perfect opportunity to come by the Career Center for a 15-20 minute appointment with an Advisor to look over your resume and provide you with feedback.

3. Dress the Part. Come to the Career Fair in professional dress. You are selling yourself to the different employers and they need to be able to picture you working in their company. See our website for more tips on professional dress.

4. Don’t be shy. The Career Fair is not a time to be humble or show your shyness. Be bold and approach the different employers because they are not going to just grab you out the crowd. Go say hi, talk about their company and talk about yourself.

5. Still need more help or would like some personal advice on how to prepare?  Then come to the Preparing for the Career Fair Workshop, on Thursday, February 16th at 5:30pm in the Career Center.

These were just a few tips to get your started. Also, check out the list of companies already slated to come to the career fair on the Career Center homepage. Remember, come to the Spring Career Fair and get started on that wonderful new career that is waiting for you.

We look forward to seeing you there! For more information on how to prepare for the Spring 2012 Career Fair please click here.
