Professor Nadia Avendaño presented her study “Viet Nam and the Chicano/a Casualties of War in Names on a Map” at the XI International Conference on Chicano Literature and Latino Studies in Salamanca, Spain, May 28-30, 2018.
Miss Olivetti Posy was awarded the Critical Language Scholarship Program, 2018. Miss Olivetti is a intelligent and hard working students. She has been taking Chinese language courses for four semesters. She majors in mathematics with a concentration in actuarial studies. She would like to apply her language skill in work with the numbers used to calculate currency exchanges, money transfers between businesses in China and the United States, or analyze the data of the Chinese and United States economies. Posy will enroll in a program in Shanghai this summer.
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
Professor Edward Chauca’s article “Mental Illness in Peruvian Narratives of Violence after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission” has been published in the latest issue of Latin American Research Review.
Dr. Michael Gómez’s study “Literature under the Microscope: Taking a Closer Look at Ramón y Cajal’s Narrative Fiction” has been accepted for publication in the prestigious Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is an intensive overseas language program for seven to ten weeks each summer. The program sponsors study in critical needs languages, which include Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Russian, Chinese, Turkish, Punjabi, and many more. Many programs require no previous language experience in the target language. Participants live and study at over twenty sites abroad, covering the equivalent of a full year of college-level language study in thirteen critical languages. All CLS Program costs are covered for participants, including: round-trip domestic and international travel; mandatory pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC; applicable visa fees; room and board; seven to ten weeks of group-based intensive language instruction; course materials; all costs associated with the CLS cultural program; and a small living stipend. The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce that it will re-launch the Freeman-ASIA Program with a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation. Applications can be submitted online starting in January 2011 for study abroad beginning in Summer 2011. Freeman-ASIA scholarships will be available for study abroad anytime through the 2012-13 academic year, with application deadlines listed on the program website.
Freeman-ASIA provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia. Award amounts vary from $3,000 – $7,000 depending on the length of study.
The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Upon their return to the U.S., students are required to promote study in Asia by sharing their experiences with peers on their home campuses and in their communities.
