National Audubon Society: Seeks Campaign Coordinator

Position Description:  Reporting to the Policy Director, Audubon South Carolina’s Campaign Coordinator is charged with building grassroots political power in support of Audubon’s policy priorities and related campaigns, with a particular focus on state and federal climate mitigation and adaptation policies.

The Campaign Coordinator will support the Policy Director in the development and refinement of campaign and digital engagement plans. He or she will also lead the implementation of campaigns—developing specific work plans to accomplish stated goals, strategies and tactics, and responsible for tracking and reporting associated metrics.

In coordination with and support from the Engagement Manager, the National Campaign’s team, and Audubon South Carolina staff, he or she will organize, engage and mobilize constituents in Audubon’s network of chapter members, supporters and advocates; while reaching out to new constituencies to grow, strengthen, and diversify our existing grassroots advocacy network.

Based in Columbia or Charleston, SC, and having the ability to travel within the state, as needed, and in accordance with all public health and safety guidelines, the Campaign Manager will bring the organization’s ambitious conservation-focused strategic plan to life in communities across the state, helping to contribute to our Audubon’s overall goal of becoming the most effective conservation network in America.

Essential Functions:  

  • Campaign Management
    • In consultation with the Policy Director and key leadership, manage the implementation of policy campaigns in SC. This includes developing a workplan to meet stated goals, strategies and tactics; supporting the development of messaging and media needs; ensuring accountability to established metrics; and on-the-ground implementation of campaign tactics.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of digital engagement plans as it relates to achieving campaign objectives.
    • Establish and build positive working relationships with Audubon’s state leadership and staff and leverage local knowledge, relationships and expertise to help meet campaign objectives.
    • Collaborate with the Engagement Manager to integrate and coordinate campaign work across programmatic departments.
    • Deliver input from volunteers and partners to the leadership team to help inform strategies.
    • Track and monitor campaigns for national and state tracking needs. Provide regular updates to leadership on campaign progress and outputs, such as letters to the editor, outreach activities, in-district meetings, etc.
  • Campaign Organizing
    • Organize, coordinate and staff a variety of organizing activities, such as lobbying days, phone banking events and virtual and in-person gatherings and events, as conditions allow.
    • Regularly provide training and leadership development opportunities for advocacy volunteers.
    • Work with Engagement Manager, volunteers and partners to raise the profile of Audubon’s work and mission in the community through presentations, earned media, and other outreach activities.
    • Engage existing Audubon supporters and chapter members to participate in campaign activities.
    • Continuously identify and implement ways to expand the organization’s bipartisan community of supporters, volunteers, and partners through recruitment and partnership building aligned long-term goals. This should include opportunities to increase equity and diversity in our campaigns work.
  • Policy/State Team Support
    • As needed, support policy work, which may include policy research and development, monitoring and tracking of legislator engagement and legislation, participating in partner coordinating calls on campaign policy issues,
    • Support the development team as needed.
    • Other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve campaign objectives.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3 years of related professional experience in campaigns, grassroots advocacy, volunteer management, policy, public service or related field, with desired experience managing staff and teams. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated management experience of campaigns, people and budgets. Experience running campaigns at the local, state, and federal level necessary.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to motivate volunteers and partners essential.
  • Thorough understanding of advocacy, communications, and grassroots engagement. Experience working with diverse constituencies ranging from race, income level to political views required.
  • A self-starter who is motivated and able to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to build consensus among a wide range of individuals. Must be comfortable with public speaking.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple complex or multifaceted projects through to success, including meeting financial goals, established metrics, and project deadlines.
  • Experience leveraging social media and digital mobilizing tools to advance policy priorities.
  • Tech-savvy, with proficiency in MS Office applications, EveryAction and/or other campaign/advocacy tools and other online software.
  • Established background or familiarity with clean energy and other climate-related issues highly desired.
  • Willingness to travel across the assigned state, as well as throughout Audubon network, including the possibility of some regional or national travel. Must have a flexible approach to work, including comfortable working virtually, and evenings and weekends as the job responsibilities demand.
