International Communication Assoc.: Seeks Director of Publications & Marketing

Position Summary:  Director works with both external and internal stakeholders to promote the field of communication, with ICA as its standard bearer. The Director is responsible for spearheading publications-related strategic direction initiatives and for the planning, coordination, and management of ICA’s integrated marketing and public relations functions. In addition, the Director will direct and communicate the organization’s messaging and ensure overall continuity of institutional brand consistency and image in line with rebrand completed in 2019. Moreover, the Director will support the organization’s staff and board in developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with external organizations, funders and publishers, and serve the Executive Committee in the development and implementation new Association programs where there is an identified need. While the Association is based in Washington, DC, the Director position and approved to work from almost any locale in the world.

  • Planning, organizing, and directing overall communication strategies and public information activities for the organization;
  • Managing, planning, directing, controlling, and implementing a proactive communication program to enhance the reputation of the association and visibility of the field;
  • Overseeing internal and external communication and presentations, in close relation with the managing staff of ICA divisions, interest groups and committees;
  • Overseeing the association’s digital communication, including the content for the website and social media;
  • Developing, maintaining and promoting an ongoing service for members and interested external organizations that circulates updated news about member research, teaching, and service;
  • Coordinating, overseeing and attending press activities, such as press releases and events;
  • Maintaining extensive and positive relationships with national and international media, with publishing companies, and with ICA’s own editorial boards and editors
  • Representing the organization to the media as it pertains to coverage of publications-related issues and events (newsworthy research);
  • Providing detailed reports of activities to the Board on a biannual basis, including return-on-investment analyses;
  • Participating in strategic planning with the Executive Director and the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors
  • Serve as a liaison between communication scholars and key publics (e.g. the media, policy-makers, other academic organizations). The Director will be responsible for consulting with division chairs and fellows in order to identify interesting research and events. Specific criteria for selecting and highlighting work should be determined in the future. The Director should actively seek out relevant information and materials following specific guidelines agreed/endorsed by ICA.
  • Produce content for distribution through several information channels and platforms. Content could be gathered through several mechanisms. The Director should work with journal editors and editorial boards to pick noteworthy and newsworthy and policy relevant research findings and reflections from the ICA-affiliated journals. Also, the Director should work closely with ICA officers to identify relevant events and opportunities. The Director should maintain an updated database of experts on various technical areas (e.g. health, gender, media effects, media/information policy, environment, politics, race, ethnicity, religion, war/conflict) in order to contact them to address press inquiries and participate in various venues and events, when possible proactively pursuing these placements or overseeing the outsourcing of this function.
  • Manage and handle several information channels and platforms (from live interviews to press releases to social media).
  • Coordinate/provide logistical support to members/groups/divisions organizing local, national, and international events primarily aimed at raising the visibility of ICA.
  • Monitor appearances of ICA and its members in prestige media and make these known to membership through appropriate channels
  • Participate and lead publishing activities with partners, and serve as the main contact for our publishing partners.
  • Lead technology-based initiatives with the conference and association in general, including mobile apps and website/AMS vendor.
  • Lead RFP and negotiation process for operational vendors relevant to expertise, including taking journal bundle out to bid.
  • Assist the Executive Director in tasks and projects handed down by the Executive Committee derived from the Association Strategic Plan.
  • Travel as assigned by the Executive Director.

Requirements:

  • Advanced Degree preferred (undergraduate degree in relevant field required)
  • Previous experience in either nonprofit association management or academic publishing required
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication and interpersonal communication skills, positive attitude, ability to multi-task and work as part of a team
  • Superior customer service, organizational, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Must demonstrate an ability to assume responsibility and pay keen attention to detail
  • Must be self-directed: comfortable working autonomously while being accountable to high-level leadership
  • Process-oriented (demonstrated talent for creating, implementing, and maintaining processes)
  • Computer Skills:
    • Microsoft Office proficiency
    • Knowledge of website management systems
    • Ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Can work from any location, full time. Amenable to travel 4-5 times per year to the ICA headquarters for two days each trip, plus domestic travel to executive board January meeting and one annual conference (this conference is in North America every other year, and in intervening years alternates between Europe and Asia/Oceania).
  • Demonstrated ability to both supervise and be supervised remotely
