The Gibbes Museum of Art’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series is asking, “what is art?” and Honors students can claim a free ticket!

When/Where: Wednesday, November 2, 2022, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM in the Sottile Theatre.

The lecture: What is art? What makes it good or bad, and who decides? “Critic of the people” Jerry Saltz will discuss our society’s complex relationship with artistic creation.

The speaker: Jerry Saltz is a Senior Art Critic for New York Magazine, Saltz is a Pulitzer Prize-winner and author of the New York Times best-seller How to be an Artist.

Great fit for: Artists of all mediums / Art lovers / Anyone who needs a little more art in their life

Honors Art Nights promotes good health and well-being

October’s Honors Art Night is right around the corner! Join us on October 18th, 4:30-6 PM in Berry Hall, Room 103.

The Activity:

  • We are redecorating the gallery space in Berry Hall over the academic year!
  • Part of getting back to normal is making our spaces reflect and celebrate who we are as a community.
  • In a series of monthly art nights, we will use the Honors Engaged and UN Sustainable Development Goals as a starting point for building friendships and collaborative art-making.

Need to Know Details:

  • Bring your ID!
  • October is about Good Health and Well-being – get ready to show your friends (and yourself) some love!
  • No art skills or experience necessary!
  • All supplies provided!

Target Audience:

  • All Honors students are welcome.

Winthrop University U.S. Dept. of Ed TRiO Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement projects

Winthrop McNair Scholars offers a paid summer research internship ($2800), summer room & board, and faculty mentoring. McNair Scholars present their research at a national conference, and many have earned national awards for their presentations.

Additionally, Winthrop’s McNair program pays for students’ travel to conferences, graduate school fairs, graduate school test prep & fees, graduate school application fees, and more! 

Winthrop’s McNair Scholars produce award winning research and go on to succeed in highly competitive graduate programs. This past summer, Winthrop students earned 25% of all of the awards at the Winthrop conference, 62.5% of the 8 first place awards, and 83% of the first place awards for the 6 categories in which they competed.

McNair Scholars receive guidance throughout the graduate application and interview process as well as help finding funding for graduate study. More information about the program is available here!

Applications are accepted year-round, but the deadline for priority consideration this year is Oct. 17. Recommendations are due by Oct. 24.

CofC Stages season kicks off with production of Violet featuring multiple Honors students

The first production in the 2022-23 CofC Stages season is Violet, a story of a young woman’s quest for beauty amidst the image-obsessed landscape of the 1960s

  • Opening night is Friday, September 30, with performances running through October 8.

The production: Facially disfigured in a childhood accident, Violet dreams of a miraculous transformation through the power of faith. Convinced that a televangelist in Oklahoma can heal her, she hops a Greyhound bus and starts the journey of a lifetime, discovering love and the true meaning of beauty along the way.

Honors connection: Multiple Honors students are involved in the production, both on-stage and behind-the-scenes. Come out and support them!

The Charleston Literary Festival will take place from November 4th through 13th, and will feature renowned authors, including Geraldine Brooks, Frans de Waal, Eddie Glaude Jr., Tiya Miles, Jean Hanff Korelitz, Patrick Radden Keefe, Renee Dudley, Elizabeth Williamson, and many more.

Apply to the Change Maker Program

Interested in making CofC a more sustainable community? The Cougar Changemaker Program aims to empower the campus community to create innovative sustainability initiatives through an accessible and well-supported change-making framework.

The Center for Sustainable Development is looking for projects that aim to make the College of Charleston campus more sustainable. Each semester, the Center for Sustainable Development can provide funding for up to $5,000!

The CofC Change Maker Program is a lengthy application, but the first part of the application is due September 26th, 2022. 

This is an amazing opportunity to make a positive local impact and boost your résumé.

Operations and marketing internships available with the Charleston Literary Festival

The Charleston Literary Festival has two fall internship opportunities reserved exclusively for CofC students.

The festival: A boutique literary festival that runs November 4 through 13 in downtown Charleston, with international and national award-winning authors providing diverse audiences with a forum for engaging with new ideas and experiencing the transformative power of great literature.

The opportunities: One internship is for operations and the other for marketing, but both would provide terrific experiential learning and networking opportunities for our students.

  • Pay is $15 an hour for an average of 10 hours a week.

In the run up to the festival, we need a festival intern dedicated to operational assistance to plan and run a great 10-day festival. This is an incredible opportunity for people with both a creative and analytical side to learn and thrive.

Duration of Internship: 10 hours per week, running September until mid-November.

Pay: $15 per hour

Job Description, Operations Intern

  • Event planning: Assist event staff in organizing information in the lead-up to the festival. Tasks may include creation or maintenance of complex spreadsheets, data entry, flyer distribution, and otherwise.
  • Party planning: Assist event staff in managing guest lists and head counts, supply pick-ups, as well as manual party set-up and management day-of.
  • Event management: assist in day-to-day running of the festival: communicating with volunteers, working front of house, managing guest lists/invite lists, acting as hands-on assistant to festival staff

Skills + Qualifications

  • Strong interest in books, and authors (both national and international)
  • Pragmatic, proactive personality with a growth mindset
  • Ability to adapt quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Access to a car and the ability to drive (note: nice-to-have, not necessary)
  • Stellar organizational skills
  • Ability to do light lifting: e.g. moving chairs, tables, etc.

  • Assist marketing team on distribution of marketing materials around Charleston (libraries, retailers, partners)
  • Liaise with partners to build marketing displays where necessary
  • Work with social media team to help create and organize assets for different channels and partners
  • Liaising with press at event; communicating with press as festival approaches
  • Working with event photographer to realize shot lists

Skills + Qualifications

  • Strong interest in books, and authors (both national and international)
  • Pragmatic, proactive personality with a growth mindset
  • Ability to adapt quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
