Operations and marketing internships available with the Charleston Literary Festival

The Charleston Literary Festival has two fall internship opportunities reserved exclusively for CofC students.

The festival: A boutique literary festival that runs November 4 through 13 in downtown Charleston, with international and national award-winning authors providing diverse audiences with a forum for engaging with new ideas and experiencing the transformative power of great literature.

The opportunities: One internship is for operations and the other for marketing, but both would provide terrific experiential learning and networking opportunities for our students.

  • Pay is $15 an hour for an average of 10 hours a week.

Festival Intern: Operations

About Us

Charleston Literary Festival is a boutique literary festival that takes place each November in Charleston, South Carolina. Launched in 2017 in collaboration with the historic Charleston Library Society and the Charleston Trust in the UK (home to the radical artists and writers of the Bloomsbury Group), Charleston Literary Festival is now an independent non-profit entity. With an emphasis on featuring international and national award-winning authors, the festival is committed to providing diverse audiences with a forum for engaging with new ideas and experiencing the transformative power of great literature.

Why we need you

This year’s festival takes place from November 4-13 in downtown Charleston. In the run up to the festival, we need a festival intern dedicated to operational assistance to plan and run a great 10-day festival. This is an incredible opportunity for people with both a creative and analytical side to learn and thrive.

Duration of Internship: 10 hours per week, running September until mid-November.

Pay: $15 per hour

Job Description, Operations Intern

  • Event planning: Assist event staff in organizing information in the lead-up to the festival. Tasks may include creation or maintenance of complex spreadsheets, data entry, flyer distribution, and otherwise.
  • Party planning: Assist event staff in managing guest lists and head counts, supply pick-ups, as well as manual party set-up and management day-of.
  • Event management: assist in day-to-day running of the festival: communicating with volunteers, working front of house, managing guest lists/invite lists, acting as hands-on assistant to festival staff

Skills + Qualifications

  • Strong interest in books, and authors (both national and international)
  • Pragmatic, proactive personality with a growth mindset
  • Ability to adapt quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Access to a car and the ability to drive (note: nice-to-have, not necessary)
  • Stellar organizational skills
  • Ability to do light lifting: e.g. moving chairs, tables, etc.

Festival Intern: Marketing

Job Description, Marketing Intern

  • Assist marketing team on distribution of marketing materials around Charleston (libraries, retailers, partners)
  • Liaise with partners to build marketing displays where necessary
  • Work with social media team to help create and organize assets for different channels and partners
  • Liaising with press at event; communicating with press as festival approaches
  • Working with event photographer to realize shot lists

Skills + Qualifications

  • Strong interest in books, and authors (both national and international)
  • Pragmatic, proactive personality with a growth mindset
  • Ability to adapt quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Access to a car and the ability to drive (note: nice-to-have, not necessary)
  • Stellar organizational skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and basic ability to create content for social media
  • Ability to do light lifting: e.g. moving chairs, tables, etc.
