Honors Leadership

The Honors College offers many competitive opportunities to develop professional leadership skills while contributing meaningfully to all we do on campus and in the wider Charleston community. From social media interns and HUB managers to Peer Facilitators and office interns, a number of positions are available each year. Please consider joining the Honors team! All positions will be advertised on the HUB, and in some cases via email, as they become available.

Students who exhibit a commitment to the the CofC Honors community, which could be demonstrated through many of the positions listed below, may be strong candidates for the Jill Conway Award. This award was established by its namesake and supported by CofC Honors alumni, faculty, staff, and friends that wanted to pay tribute to Jill’s impact on the Honors College. Jill Conway was an employee of the College of Charleston from 1984 until her retirement in 2017 and an integral part of the development of the Honors College’s Living-Learning Community. Thanks to Jill’s efforts, the Honors College experience extends beyond the classroom. The award is intended to recognize a current CofC Honors student that demonstrates engagement, personal growth, curiosity to explore new interests, and who are motivated to enhance their classroom experience.


BGS Peer Facilitator

Be a mentor to the first year class, make connections with faculty, and develop leadership skills! 

Each year, the Honors College employs approximately 20 Honors students to serve as Peer Facilitators for the Honors FYE course, Beyond George Street. First-year students are particularly encouraged to apply. As a PF, you will be a mentor, teacher, advisor, coach, and crucial connecting link for first-year students. You will also receive training from the Center for Excellence in Peer Education and contribute meaningfully to shaping the curriculum for the next BGS class.  Applications open around fall mid-terms. The time commitment is 7 hours (paid) per week in the fall with additional advising responsibilities in the spring.

Students will be selected based on review of the application, statement of interest, and interview. Selected students will be required to take the PF training course through the Center for Excellence in Peer Education. The course will be offered as an Express I or Express II class. Students will receive 2 credit hours for the course. Peer Facilitators will commit to at least 7 hours per week, including class meeting time and one supervision meeting per week. Students will be paid $10/hour.

Peer Facilitator Requirements:

  • Member of the Honors College in good standing
  • Either currently enrolled or completed Honors First Year Experience (BGS)
  • Availability to take spring Express I or II training course at one of the times listed above
  • Attend Spring 2017 retreat (to be held on one of the first three Saturdays in April)
  • Attend Fall 2017 retreat which will be held the Thursday before the 1st day of class
  • Willingness to plan Fall schedule to accommodate Honors BGS (this includes keeping the period before and after the class meeting time open)
  • No more than 15 hours of course load in Fall 2017 (negotiable in some cases)
  • No more than 15 hours of outside activities – including other jobs/clubs/sports

Preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria:
• Those with a GPA of 3.4 or higher
• Those who plan to take no more than 15 hours
• Those who have reasonable time commitments that do not detract from BGS PF responsibilities

Serve as an HSA officer! 

HSA officers learn leadership skills, how to prepare and work within budgets, how to work collaboratively to put on successful events, and how to increase the engagement of Honors students into the Honors community. HSA officers positively impact students’ experiences in the Honors College and have opportunities to collaborate with other leaders within the Honors College and with the Honors College Dean through community roundtables.

The Honors Student Association is a student-led, SGA-funded organization that enhances the college experience for Honors College students by providing activities that bring Honors students together. Events include varied social, leadership and community service activities and are intended to keep all year’s Honors student engaged in the Honors community. Successful events from previous years are held and new events as determined by student interest, selected by officers, areheld each year. Officers are responsible for working within SGA guidelines and budgets, for the timely publicizing of events through social media and other methods, for being present at and cleaning up after events to ensure their success. Officers are elected in the Spring term when a call for candidates and statements is made. Incoming officers will work with current officers until the end of the spring semester to ensure smooth transition to new leadership and work together on Spring events and plan for summer and fall events.

Keep the Honors College running smoothly! 

As an Office Intern in the Honors Center, you are commonly the source of the first impression of the Honors College for our prospective students and their families. Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including mature phone etiquette) are a must. Student workers must be passionate about the Honors College, up-to-date on Honors College events and prospective student protocol, and able to quickly adapt to whatever is needed of them on a day-to-day basis.

  • Answering the Honors College main phone line
  • Responding to Honors@cofc.edu emails by answering directly or referring the email to the appropriate Honors College faculty/staff member
  • Processing application materials
  • Assisting the Office Manager with administrative tasks

  • Helping with the planning and execution of Honors College events


Honors College Content and Community Manager

Be the Honors College Online Voice! 

The Content and Community Manager will be key to maintaining the Honors Hub and sustaining engagement across all social platforms. The intern will play a major role in coordinating, editing and producing content in various forms, and will be the “voice” of the Honors College on all outlets  This position is ideally suited for students who hope to gain experience in the fields of leadership, journalism, higher education, social media marketing and/or content marketing. This position reports to the Associate Director of Recruitment and Marketing for the Honors College.

Responsibilities:

  • Create content and maintain the following outlets: The Honors Hub, The Honors Blog, Email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr
  • Implement a communications calendar for all social media outlets and the Honors Blog
  • Engage with followers on various platforms in a timely fashion
  • Copyediting and proofing an array of content
  • Monitor trends in social media channels, tools and applications, and apply that knowledge to increasing the use of social media in the Honors College.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Preferably majoring in Communications, Marketing or English. Strong interest in working with social media and content marketing in a professional atmosphere. Multi-tasker with initiative to self-motivate and complete tasks. Knowledge of social media platforms, design platforms (Publisher or Adobe), and basic knowledge of WordPress or Google Analytics preferred. Interest in pursuing a career in higher education, marketing or journalism.

Scholar-Citizen Initiative Member

Channel your passions into meaningful change!

The Scholar-Citizen Initiative (SCI) is a select group of Honors students dedicated to improving their communities on campus and in the greater Charleston area. Members of the initiative meet periodically throughout the academic year as agents for Honors student interest. The group works to democratically channel the commonwealth of Honors students’ passions and skills into action via impactful programming.

Members of the Scholar-Citizen Initiative must demonstrate the capacity for leadership on campus and in the community. Applicants must have completed at least one semester in the Honors College, and be in good standing with a 3.4 GPA. If accepted, members must attend at least one SCI meeting and two events directly related to the goals of the initiative per semester. All students who are interested are encouraged to apply. Honors Committee Student Representative

Help provide faculty members with a student’s perspective! 

The Honors Committee, which is elected by the faculty, has two open positions for student representatives each academic year. This is a great way to network with faculty, build leadership skills, and have a role in shaping the future of the Honors College. The committee is primarily focused on reading admissions applications, reviewing course proposals, establishing/managing academic policy, and setting the vision for the Honors College’s future.

Honors College Advisory Board Student Representative

Represent your peers on the Advisory Board!

The Honors College Advisory Board was established to contribute professional expertise, community and alumni perspective, and financial support, and to advise the Dean, the faculty, and students to accomplish the stated mission and goals of the Honors College. The Board is comprised of alumni, parents of current students, community members, and other friends of the Honors College. Each year a current CofC Honors student is selected to serve on the Advisory Board to provide information and feedback from the student perspective.

  • The applicant must be a sophomore, junior or senior in good standing in the Honors College.
  • The applicant must be able to attend meetings of the Honors Advisory Board.
  • The applicant must be interested in working with board members to advance the Honors College and be willing to represent the Honors student perspective with confidence.
