What a year it’s been!
Our program continues to grow as one of the College of Charleston’s innovative, interdisciplinary programs. In 2015, we were named one of 5 fastest growing majors at the College. During the past academic year, 328 majors were involved in a myriad of teaching-learning activities including academic coursework, volunteer opportunities, and internship experiences. In May, we graduated 69 of them – many who are gainfully employed in Charleston and around the country at Rawle Murdy Advertising Associates, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Blackbaud on Daniel Island, and Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. We placed 106 students as interns with 84 arts and cultural organizations and businesses. Eleven of our students completed summer internships in New York City, Hollywood and Beverly Hills, Nashville, and Boston. Our program was even represented by summer interns in cultural institutions around the world in Kamuela, Hawaii; Paddington, Australia; and Paris, France!
Many thanks to Mark Bryan, the Artist-in-Residence for our Music Industry Concentration, for his work over the past several years that resulted in the program’s first study abroad program. Coordinated by Program Coordinator, Claire Long, seven students were enrolled in our Global Music Industry Study Abroad Program in Sweden in July. In Stockholm and at the University of Örebro, they studied songwriting, artist management, streaming, video marketing, festival management and completed releases guided by Bryan, Long, and Swedish musicians and music professionals.
We have also been busy with ongoing fundraising efforts for our first endowment – the Scott Shanklin-Peterson Internship Endowment. We welcomed many of you at the formal announcement of the Endowment in May that was coupled with our first annual gathering of Arts Management Alumni. Our 2nd annual alumni event is scheduled for May 6, 2018, and will be hosted by alumni from the Arts Management Class of 2010. Spread the word – we look forward to seeing many of our alumni during that weekend.
