Due Giorno: Adventures in Local Adaptation

Today was a beautiful day to start our adventures in the fourth largest city in Italy. Frances started the morning with a tour of the historic core of the city and explained to us the stairs and the ascensore (elevator). Yes, there are public elevators in Genoa! They provide access to the upper terraces and neighborhoods of the city. The Clemson Villa is on one of the many steep hillsides of the city and the ascensore provides access to the Castelleto neighborhood in which it is located.

We spent the morning exploring piazzos and the port, ending our tour at an Italian cafeteria style restaurant. We were then set free to wander, get lost, and find our way home again. The climb back up to the Villa made us all think that the ascensore might have been a better idea! We ended our day with an introductory team meeting to discuss logistics for measured drawings of the Villa as well as an urban sociology project.

Italian wine and a Lindsay’s fantastic sandwiches for dinner are calling….more tomorrow!
