Genoa Fieldwork

The Charles E Daniel Center for Building Research and Urban Studies is housed in the Villa Chichizola, built in 1899 by Arturo Caimi.

A historic structures report or interior finishes analysis has never been conducted in the villa. The MSHP Field School in Genoa will complete this documentation process.

Maymester 2016 will build on past findings and make significant progress toward completion of a Historic Structures report for the villa.  Existing conditions will be surveyed and compiled in a reference document for the Clemson Architectural Foundation.  Genoa 2016 will address significant aspects of the documentation process which may include: archival research and compilation of a grammar of interior surface treatments for this early 20th century house, identification of significant time periods for the villa, document through measured drawings the garage and garden, in situ investigation of the building fabric to establish where sampling and finishes analysis will provide the most information and a structural survey.
