ACLU of SC: Seeking Remote Digital Communications and Design Intern (Fall 2020)

Hours:  10 hours per week

Compensation:  $15 per hour

Position Description:  The ACLU of South Carolina (ACLU-SC) seeks a part-time position of Digital Communications and Design Intern. The duration of this position is late August/early September through mid-December for 10 hours per week. Work will be entirely virtual due to COVID-19. The Digital Communications and Design Intern will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour.

The ACLU-SC seeks an individual who is passionate about racial equity, civil rights, and civil liberties for a fall internship. We are a nonprofit organization that defends the civil rights and civil liberties of all South Carolina residents through policy advocacy, community organizing, litigation, and strategic communications. Currently, we are working on cutting-edge projects including building a campaign for reinvesting in communities that are over-policed, protecting against police abuse, safeguarding 2020 elections and voting rights, ending the war on drugs, protecting incarcerated people during COVID-19, and defending people’s right to protest.

This internship is designed so that the ideal candidate will play a critical role in our efforts to drive social change shaping a public narrative that moves communities and public officials forward on our issues.

Responsibilities:  The Digital Communications and Design Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Policy and Communications Director and will have an opportunity to work across our team on a variety of projects and campaigns.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identify, develop, create, and/or edit content for the ACLU-SC’s website and social media platforms.
  • Design digital and print materials that advance specific advocacy and development initiatives, including video content.
  • Design evergreen digital templates for social media, email outreach, marketing, and events.
  • Design ACLU-SC branded promotional items (stickers, shirts, etc.).
  • Track and analyze social media and other communications metrics to gather ideas and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with communications-related administrative tasks as needed, such as updating web pages and tracking media placements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of ACLU-SC
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex issues across a variety of mediums to broad and diverse audiences of members and stakeholders
  • Experience with graphic design, web design, video editing, and social media platforms including but not limited to Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Canva, Hootsuite, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram (including IGTV), and YouTube
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and commitment to learning
  • Strong project and time management skills and the ability to see a task through from beginning to end
  • Commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
