Arrivederci Fred.

Today started out all full of promise, with us choosing different areas of the villa to document.  We each had to choose something that hadn’t been previously covered – from either internal details or the external grounds of the villa.  This information would then be cataloged into a report that has been added to each summer.  Following preliminary work on the villa projects, we discussed our public spaces project.  Drawing names out of a hat (ok…off of a gelato stand table…), each of us was assigned a piazza within the city.  Our task during the next week and a half is to become an expert on our piazza – knowing how it is used, by who, and when do they use it.  Doing this, we will experience firsthand how differently public spaces are used when compared to Charleston.  Since we have to observe the piazza at different times, if we happen to arrive in time for a socially acceptable espresso (or something else)…well, when in Genoa…

Sadly, the low point of the day was Fred’s disappearance during our hike to see the old forts in the hills surrounding the city.  Speculation is that Fred met his Italian soulmate, and has left us for la dolce vita.  We had hoped to have many more adventures with him during our time here, but hey – that’s amore.

Enjoying the view after a good hike.

The gang all excited to get to the top.

The last known picture of Fred, before amore struck and he ran off.
