How to Help a Distressed Student- Suicide Prevention Trainings

** From Caity Hill, Outreach and Programming Coordinator, Office of Student Wellness and Wellbeing **

The Office of Student Wellness and Well-being will be having How to Help a Distressed Student- Suicide Prevention Trainings for faculty and staff on 4/18 at 12:00 pm and 4/21 at 2:00 pm both trainings will be held in Stern 409. In the training staff will learn how to identify signs of distress, how to talk to students who are in distress, and what mental health resources are available to help students on and off campus.

This training is a part of our federal suicide prevention grant we received in October. We are excited to be able to have opportunities to provide more training and conversations around the mental health of our students. Our goal is to have our community feel prepared with the knowledge needed to help students who are struggling, so that we can provide them the help and resources they need. We will be having more How to Help a Distressed Student trainings as well as an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) in the summer. The How to Help a Distressed Student is approximately 1 hour and is a more basic presentation. The international certificate in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training is a 2-day skills based workshop that normally costs participants $250 to attend. We are able to offer this free of cost as part of this grant.

Please share this information and the flyer (attached) with your department. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!
