Philabundance: Seeking Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications

Position DescriptionReporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications will guide and execute the strategic direction and priorities for all internal and external communications for Philabundance, including public relations, media relations, digital media, graphic design and brand development. The Director is responsible for managing all communications plan activities, engaging stakeholders, building external relationships, increasing awareness and positioning Philabundance as one of the leading experts in hunger relief in the Delaware Valley. This role has critical oversight of the brand.

The Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications is a member of the Philabundance leadership team, works in close collaboration with the executive team, other senior staff and departments across the organization and advises and provides guidance on a variety of strategic initiatives. This position works in close collaboration with the Chief Development Officer to develop digital and direct mail fundraising strategies donor stewardship through social media and key events and establishing shared revenue goals. The Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications is currently responsible for the supervision of a team that includes a communications operations manager, public relations associate, digital media associate and graphic designer.

In addition, this professional will manage external consultant relationships, as required, including those pertaining to trade show involvement.

Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop, manage and execute a long-range strategic marketing and communications plan in partnership with multiple departments to strengthen the Philabundance brand identity among key stakeholder audiences
  • Identify specific communications goals for Philabundance, and develop communications plans and strategies that will enable Philabundance’s executives and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted high-level audiences, including public officials, key hunger relief sector and community influencers and the media
  • Identify challenges and issues facing the hunger relief sector and developing communications strategies to communicate with key stakeholders
  • Determine appropriate communications tactics to disseminate news, promote advocacy campaigns, publicize events and broaden audiences
  • Build and manage the communications advisory committee, an external advisory group

Communications Operations:

  • Direct and oversee the development and use of the Philabundance brand
  • Direct and oversee the execution of pertinent copy for internal and external stakeholders to ensure that it aligns with messaging and strategic communications branding with an emphasis on development-related collateral
  • Oversee and direct the execution of all print, digital and branded materials, including newsletters, digital content and other communications; website CMS, social media and video content utilizing traditional and emerging technology
  • Understand the role of digital relationship building in delivering new relationships and donors; work to deliver digital fundraising revenue goals established collaboratively with development; also partner with development on direct mail strategy
  • Prioritize partnership and media opportunities, work with the public relations associate to prepare talking points, FAQs and speeches; and provide ongoing media training for executive team, leadership and staff brand ambassadors
  • Serve as the organization’s media lead and support the CEO as spokesperson
  • Cultivate, maintain and manage media relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the organization and the hunger relief sector
  • Manage relationships with key communications-related vendors and consultants

Communications Team Management:

  • Supervise a communications team currently comprised of a communications operations manager, public relations associate, digital media associate and graphic designer to support, develop and execute an overall communications strategy
  • Promote and encourage staff professional development and high-level performance
  • Lead and coach staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis
  • Track and measure the level of engagement with key stakeholders through research, analytics and media monitoring

Budgeting:

  • Develop and oversee the budget for the strategic marketing and communications department

*Undertake other duties as assigned by Chief Executive Officer

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public relations or related field preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree with min. 8 years strategic marketing & communications with demonstrated success in communications or related field, preferably in the nonprofit or government sector
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to draft materials on a wide range of topics
  • Highly collaborative, high energy style of leadership with the ability to be a unifying force with the department and across the organization
  • Strong team-building and organizing skills
  • A relationship builder with the flexibility to manage and influence communications strategies and tactics
  • Experience developing and executing strategic communications plans
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with key regional and local news media to execute all aspects of media relations including story development, media targeting, pitching, and relationship management. Knowledge of Philadelphia and surrounding region media preferred
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage projects from inception through execution
  • A commitment to advancing Philabundance’s values, mission, and goals
  • Entrepreneurial with the ability to work independently and stay organized in a fast-paced environment, manage several projects simultaneously, and adjust strategy in response to frequently changing demands, enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Word Press, Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Premier, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator); and other industry and project management software

Essential Job Functions:

  • Travel is required. Must be willing and able to travel within the service area (employee can use public transportation, rideshare service, personal vehicle or other means)
  • Work in a seated position up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • Bend, stoop/squat, and walk intermittently throughout the day
  • Lift up to 15 pounds
  • See, hear, and speak with sufficient capability to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper safety conditions.
  • Perform office tasks using simple hand grasp, fine hand manipulation, and reach associated with assigned tasks such as keying.
