“Above the Fold” Exhibition Opens Friday, January 31st–Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art

The latest event in the Global Awareness Forum is one that might have you wondering about its global content. Jody Zellen’s exhibition “Above the Fold,” opening on Friday, January 31st, and running through March 8th, takes the front pages of the New York Times and LA Times and works and re-works them into a multitude of re-visions and re-representations. The visual language of these images makes us question the stereotypical photographic representations of the world, whose familiarity — or supposed familiarity — editors work from and re-confirm as they select the pictures that will appear “above the fold.” So although the images may be drawn solely from American newspapers, they speak to us about what we know, what we think we know, and what we are visually encouraged to know about the world around us. The show thus opens up ways to think about how our global awareness is mediated via selective and partial processes of news-gathering, photography, and editorial choice.

For a preview of the show see Leah Rhyne’s article in this week’s City Paper.
