A Grave Expedition

Our fourth day in Genoa began like most others with breakfast and a meeting in the sun room of the villa. We discussed our weekend plans and how the rest of the day would progress. After meeting in the morning, each group worked on their individual projects until lunch. We ate lunch at the villa with our hosts and then ventured out in to the city to catch the bus. We mastered the bus system in Genoa during our trip to the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno.

The group spread out to explore the cemetery for the next two hours.  The cemetery is one of the largest in Europe and covers more than a square kilometer. |It is dotted with elaborate mausoleums that wind up the hillside. Most mausoleums include entire families, while some individual graves are present.  Many of the graves were marked with photographs to memorialize the individuals that were buried there. The most distinguishing features of the cemetery were the massive and intricate statues that marked the plots.

After our tour of the cemetery, we caught the bus back to the center of town to have a small snack and wander around. Many of us went to observe the use and patterns of our piazzas in the early evening hours. We made our way back to the villa for a late dinner and good conservation.

Ciao a tutti!
