Exploring New Places by Maddie Skalski

This week we headed to Geneva, Switzerland and Nice, France! During our time in Geneva, we were able to see a very different type of environment. The beautiful nature is filled with mountains, greenery, and the famous Lake Geneva. During our free time we headed to swim in the lake, and wow was it fun but also cold! We were lucky enough to have the amazing opportunity to visit the World Health Organization. As a Public Health major, this is the gold mine of academic visits. We attended three lectures at the WHO, which was an amazing experience to learn from and interact with people working directly at the WHO to improve global health. Our first lecture was on introductory information about the WHO, our second was about immigrant health, and our last lecture was on adolescent health with a focus on tuberculosis. After our time in Geneva, we traveled to Nice. Word of advice, do NOT overpack. Lugging my mass amounts of luggage around the train station was a nightmare. Nevertheless, as soon as we arrived, we were stunned by the city’s beauty! Nice has the most charming, colorful European buildings and beautiful beaches with the bluest water I’ve ever seen. However, the beaches are rocky, which can be quite painful and difficult to walk on, but that did not stop us from spending all of our free time in the water. We even did a boat and snorkeling tour which had to have been one of the highlights of the entire trip. During our group tour, we visited castle hill which had a view that overlooked the city and coastline. It was absolutely stunning and left all of us never wanting to leave. We also explored the markets, which is one thing Nice is known for. They have markets in the street selling various things such as jewelry, artwork, flowers, food, and souvenirs. It goes without saying that I may or may not have spent way too much money, but it was all worth it.
