The Anglo American University by Madison Mahrlig

The Anglo American University is located right in the heart of Prague and has a magnificent view of Prague Castle.  The outside view is not the only thing that surprised me about the university but the classrooms are so exquisitely decorated that they look like they are castle rooms themselves. The rooms all have gold accents and marvelous chandeliers.

The building is not the only major difference between the College of Charleston and AAU, the classes are also set up very differently.  Each class only meets once a week for three hours.  Although I do like this structure better, because it gives more more days off that I can go to my internship, the classes seem like they never end.  It also requires a lot of refreshing and studying for examinations in order to not forget what was last covered.

The university is fairly small compared to CofC  and is all contained within one building with a courtyard.  The students come from all over but primarily are from the Czech Republic and study abroad.  Due to this, there seems to be a big separation between study abroad students, and students that actually attend the university because ¼ or so of the school every semester is American’s studying abroad.  A lot of the students won’t approach you first because they know this fact, so I learned that it is best to sit in new places every class and talk to the people around me during break to get them to warm up to me.

As for the class breakdown, the sizes are fairly similar to those at CofC ranging between 20-25.  The classes that you take will range from nearly all study abroad students to practically none.  For instance, in my art history class there are only 3 students studying abroad while in my music appreciation there are 15 students studying abroad.

Overall the university is set up to have a great mix of cultures from different countries and has a unique class system that I think would be beneficial in many colleges where people are also trying to work or do internships during their studies.
