Design Notes

Makeup/Hair and Wigs: Trevor Catalano, Junior Theatre Major

As an independent designer, it is my responsibility to fulfill the design of the costume designer and director, and then to perfect the character’s look through continual conversation with the costume and wig/hair designers. Normally a costume designer is responsible for all aspects of a character’s design, but this show poses individual challenges which require an extra hand: demons, elves, monsters, and special effects makeup which is executed onstage all attracted me to design this production. Between all designers involved with costuming, much of my inspiration came from our design sessions; while reading the play I was more focused on “How do we make that happen” and character personality coming through their makeup. I am also lucky as a member of the cast (as Orcus) to have a daily contact with the developing characters, which has definitely impacted my designs. My research was primarily based in 90s culture and makeup trends for the “real world” characters; I needed to make them represent their time as well as their personality (trashy, young, professional, etc.). The Dungeons & Dragons world provided more fun for me and allowed me to use my imagination for these awesome characters.

Costume Design:  Ann Todisco, Junior Theatre Major

I explored many different forms of research from 1995 when designing for this show. Ranging from watching movies such as Clueless and Heavy Weights to listening to music like TLC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Smashing Pumpkins, I was able to immerse myself more into their world. I used the internet and books from the library and the costume shop to inspire me with styles and trends of that era. Now that we are in the process of the creation of my designs, there are decisions and compromises that I had and will have to make as we go on. When making those decisions I have been keeping in mind not only what will look best on stage but also staying true to the character and still connecting to the story.
