BTS vs. The West

As the most popular K-Pop music act, BTS has spent the past 7 years refining their craft and bringing Korean culture and music to the global stage. If you aren’t already a fan, you’ve at least seen their influence on Twitter, Youtube, and TikTok. But, why do so many Western articles about the band discuss the group using racist generalizations about Asian culture? This article uses concepts Asian Studies and the opinions of a Korean culture expert to explore this phenomenon. The history of the Yellow Peril and the Western view of Asian men expose these racist critiques as the newest iteration of a centuries-old feud.
