In the first edition of our Alumni newsletter earlier this year, we asked Sociology Alums to help us name our new newsletter.  The Sociology faculty voted on the names submitted and Lisa Norton (SOCY ’92) was the winner with ‘The Sociology Connection’.  Congratulations, Lisa!

What have you been doing since you graduated?
I married in 1994. My husband and I have six children. I am currently homeschooling the two youngest. I also teach chastity education with an organization called Family Honor.

What is your current position?
Stay at home mom, doing it all from homeschooling to home renovations. I teach my daughters, teach in a homeschooling co-op, volunteer , and garden.

What advice would you offer to new students at the College of Charleston who are thinking of declaring a major in Sociology?
I appreciate the world view that my degree in sociology degree has given me. When reading the news, I remember lessons learned about what constitutes a valid study as well as about cultures and groups. My classes were interesting and provided a broad liberal arts education that helped to round me, not limit me. Learning how to critically think and write has served me well.

What advice would you offer to students graduating from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology?
There is no limit to what you can do. Your education can be parlayed into whatever you wish.

What was your most memorable learning experience in Sociology?
I took Feminist Theology and received an A for my efforts. This has been an interest of mine since highschool. I am a feminist yet I still respect the complementary differences between the sexes. My vocation is being a wife and mother. This vocation requires  strength, joy, and a love of learning. To be able to impact the next generation is a gift. Being a pro-life supporter and the best mom I can be has been my chance to cherish my gift of feminity.

What class did you most enjoy while earning your degree at the College of Charleston?
I really enjoyed my class in Juvenile Delinquency. My professors were interesting and had a love for teaching that I appreciated.

What made you choose the College of Charleston over other schools?
The College of Charleston was the right school for me. The reputation and the choice of majors made for a good fit. I felt that I could do anything that I wanted with my degree. I also greatly enjoyed the beautiful setting. Charleston has charmed me my whole life.  I am grateful for my degree from the College of Charleston.

How has a Sociology degree made you a more well-rounded person?
The variety of classes and majors exposed me to many excellent professors who made learning a pleasure. Dr. B. Hunt  and Dr. N. Morrison were especially memorable.
