Phishing is a form of fraud that attempts to collect sensitive information by posing as a trusted source. For instance, a phisher might pose as a representative of your bank, claiming that they need your credit card number to verify their records. Some forms of phishing even go so far as to link to fraudulent copies of legitimate webpages, tricking users into providing their login information.

Phishing is a growing problem for the College. When a student or employee falls for a phishing scam and gives away their e-mail password, that e-mail address can be used to send out millions of fraudulent e-mails. Each time this happens, mail services for the entire College are temporarily disrupted as other mail providers begin automatically directing CofC e-mails to their users’ spam folders. Because the consequences of phishing are shared by all of us, we need everyone at the College to be aware of the problem and to take steps to avoid falling for these scams.

Most importantly, remember that College of Charleston employees will never ask you for your MyCharleston password. If you receive e-mail from someone claiming to be affiliated with the College and requesting your password, simply mark the message as spam without replying.
