The College of Charleston will begin awarding transfer credit for military service starting with the Spring 2020 semester based on the criteria below:

  • Students must be a veteran with an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions, an active service member, or a member of the Reserves/National Guard who has completed required trainings. Active Duty, Reservist, and National Guard must provide Orders or Statement of Service along with their official transcript. Veterans are required to provide their DD-214 (Member 4 copy) along with their official transcript.
  • The Joint Services Transcript (JST) from the issuing agency is required for current and former Army, Navy and Marine Corps and Coast Guard students.
  • The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) official transcript is required for all students who have attended this institution.

For specific information about the Military Transfer Credit Policy, visit the Military Credit page on the TRC website.

Sandy Ferguson, Manager, Military Transfer Evaluation, will oversee the evaluation of Joint Services Transcripts (JST) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST). Sandy started in this role on November 1, 2019 and will serve as the primary point of contact for the awarding and declining of military credit in the Transfer Resource Center (TRC).

Similar to other types of transfer credit, students will have the option of declining military credit to take the course in residence at CofC or take courses at another accredited institution. Students wishing to decline their military credit should complete the Decline Military Credit Form, have it approved by their advisor, and return it to the TRC for processing.

Students admitted or readmitted Spring 2020 forward will have their JST evaluated for potential transfer credit automatically during the new student transfer credit evaluation process following admission to the College.  Students admitted or readmitted prior to Spring 2020 will be given the opportunity to have their JST evaluated for potential transfer credit during a designated petition period.  Students will receive information about this petition period in their CofC-issued email in the coming months.

The Transfer Resource Center is working to build online resources for faculty, staff, and transfer credit evaluators in CougarEd for reference during the evaluation process.  More information will be shared when these resources are available.  In the meantime, contact the TRC at transfercenter@cofc.edu or 843.953.1135 with any questions, or Sandy Ferguson directly at fergusonsl1@cofc.edu or 843.953.1065.
