In order to establish a sense of urgency and set the exigence of the film, the prodeucers adeptly chose to open the film with a confusing and somewhat alarming scene. In the scene the audience makes its first interaction with the main character, Luisa, as she walks through a scene with minimal context. In her hand she is holding a gun, which serves to bring a small bit of stress to the audience. Through the omission of any dialect, the audience is on the edge of their seats, wondering what on Earth this young girl is doing toting a gun around.

In order to ensure the attention of the audience is captured, the camera centers Luisa as she violently launches the weapon, wearing a face riddled with anguish and what appears to be sadness. The contrast between the soft setting of a pastoral scene against the dark metal and wood of the rifle serves to illustrate implicitly the differences between the peaceful side of protest and the violent side of protest. By having Luisa throw the gun away at the beginning of the film helps to establish her as the protagonist of the film, as she is painted to portray a rejector of violence.
