This scene is symbolic of Auma’s experience in Germany. Throughout the film she is treated as a secondary person. One only recognized by her skin. She had teachers who only wanted to talk to her to understand how “African” she was. Her race made her a second class citizen in some cases and she had to struggle with her identity in Germany. This scene shows her being obscured by the white and “normal” looking Germans. She talks about how she had to deal with “positive racism” and always had to explain where she was from. She felt separated from her peers. Education was important to Auma but she struggled for awhile because she had to deal with such stigma constantly. Germany is a hard place for anyone who is not white and of “German heritage”.
