A high school class in the Communist German Democratic Republic of East Germany, decided after hearing on enemy radio that Hungry was invaded again by Russia in efforts to combat the Hungarian anti-communist revolution, to have a moment of silence in class. This was to honor the fallen soldiers in the anti-communist revolution that was going on in Hungry. This “silent protest” had unforeseen consequences; expulsion from the school entirely. Through the duration of the movie, the boys who masterminded this protest and insisted on getting all the other classmates on board have to work their way around the communist school administrators in order to avoid serious trouble. This film, did a phenomenal job of showing what life was like in East Germany in 1956, the harsh punishments for supporting the counter-revolution or anti-communists are shown through out the film’s entirety. The scene from the film that I chose to add a sound effect to is the scene where Kessler instructs Theo to stand up and confirm that Kurt is “the ring-leader”  behind the counter-protest in class. Theo, knowing the consequences, shockingly, admits to his personal part in the silent protest and comes forward about being in favor of the moment of silence. Theo is then expelled by Kessler. The should I chose is the “crowd shocked gasp” because the students in the class are shocked that Theo had the nerve to tell Kessler that her theory on Kurt was  wrong. Everyone is shocked because he knew he could get expelled but he was honest anyway out of loyalty to his friend. The shock is relevant to the scene because it reveals Theo’s true character in the the sticks up for his friend and his beliefs. It helps us understand the theme of the film which is loyalty. bravery and unity.
