Percussive Protesting

Leipzig in Fall opens with crowded streets filled with protesters, and I have added the song “Drums” by Long Hair. The protesters were so passionate and so energetic, as they were literally fighting for their futures. The addition of the drums to the sprawling scenes of protesters adds to that energy and passion. The percussion adds a sense of urgency and more actively involves the audience in the experience of the protesters by making them feel a sense of rhythm and power. Even though the editing of Leipzig in Fall is very minimal, the fast tempo of the music adds energy into the scene. The tempo also feels chaotic, despite being very much organized, just like the Monday Demonstrations shown by the film. The drumbeats echo the collective chants of the people, heightening the sense of unity that was already present in the footage. The drumming also has parallels to the clapping of the protesters; even though the audience is not physically present for the protest, the drums recreate that energy in a way that helps to immerse the audience in the experience. Even though the protesters are fighting for their futures, there is a palpable excitement that I had never noticed before the addition of this music.
