The Epitome of Eisenstein’s Message

This scene, where the worker goes to report his missing tool, is arguably one of the most important scenes in the film. After finding out his tool went missing, he realizes how expensive it would be to replace it. As any worker should be able to do, is report the issue to his bosses in hopes of finding a solution that doesn’t cost him three weeks of income. This entire scene can be an example of dialectic, an idea thought of by Hegel. The thesis: the worker having an issue that should be settled with authorities, conflicts with the antithesis: the bosses calling laughing at him and calling him a thief instead of believing his word. Unfortunately the synthesis: the worker unable to bear the pressure and backlash that would come with being called a thief kills himself in the factory. This synthesis becomes a new thesis, and it basically sets the plot for the rest of the film. Not only does it set the plot, but it also depicts the films’ message of the issues within the workforce. The worker can not pay for his stolen tool, therefore, the workers are clearly underpaid. He can not even go to someone to help resolve something that is not his fault: no voice. Not only does he get blamed himself, but he gets laughed at like he was half a human: unequal and mistreatment. If there is any scene that relays the message of this protest film, it would be this one.
