Catalog description

CSIS 690/CSCI 490  Developing a Software Engineering Research Hypothesis – Students will work individually on developing a software engineering research hypothesis, developing code to test the hypothesis and writing a research paper to disseminate the results.  Students will learn how to formulate a testable hypothesis and receive mentoring in developing the code to test the hypothesis.  Students will also learn how to disseminate their research work through the sections of a research paper (Abstract, Introduction, Related Research, Research Contribution and Conclusion).  Students will work in the research lab testing their hypothesis and writing their dissemination. Each student will submit an extended abstract for inclusion in a software engineering conference. Prerequisite: CSCI 360 or CSIS 602.


  1. Understand how to define and test a software engineering hypothesis
  2. Understand how to format a IEEE computer science article
  3. Learn how to evaluate computer science articles

Evaluation schedule

80% Individual Paper
10% Recorder Presentation
10% 2nd Authorship


Over the semester students will work on an individual software engineering hypothesis. The student will disseminate the results in the form of an extended abstract.  The extended abstract will be submitted to one of the following conferences:

The paper will have have the following contents:

  1. Title
  2. Your name, 2nd author name, my name
  3. Abstract
  4. Introduction
  5. Related Work
  6. Hypothesis, Implementation & Results
  7. Conclusions

Each week you will present to the group what you have accomplished during the week.  You will be assigned a specific part of the paper each week.  Along with that weeks section of the paper the student will continue to implement their research.  Each student is expected to work 7 to 10 hours outside of class each week on your paper and research.

Virtual Presentation

All student will produce a PowerPoint presentation (not more than 15 slides) with audio, which will be uploaded on youtube.

1. The presentation should be between 15 to 20 minutes.

2. You are expected to give a brief introduction:
a) “This presentation is for the ____________ conference”
b) Title of your presentation;
c) Your name, 2nd author name,  my name and affiliation (College of Charleston).

3. It is important to include the email address, so that participants will be able to get in touch with you if they have further questions.

2nd Authorship

Every student will partner with another student to be the 2nd author on the paper.  The 2nd author will have submit comments and changes to the first authors paper.  You should spend 1/2 to 1 hour per week reading and commenting on the other paper.

Please read the College of Charlestons Student Code of Conduct. When you come to class please turn off your cell phones and all other electronic communication devices.  I do encourage discussion so if you have a question do not hold back from interrupting me if you are afraid I have moved on.  If it is something I will talk about a little later I will note it on the board so we do not forget.
