What: STEM hands-on activities and demonstrations including (to name only a few) marine animal touch tanks, energy and light physics demos, earth and planetary science, sustainability in the classroom, robotics and computer science, flying paper airplane construction, dancing with Clyde the Cougar, and the list goes on!

Want to learn about the cool and dynamic things that can happen on our planet and the Solar System?

Join us to find our more about our dynamic Earth on November 14. This event is presented by the College of Charleston Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences and the Geology Club. We will be hosting hands-on exploration stations for all ages! Activities will include Lava Races, Interactive Topography Maps, an interactive walk of the Solar System and MUCH more! Then in the evening, Dr. John Chadwick will show new images and discuss amazing discoveries from recent missions to Earth’s Planetary neighbors in a talk titled: The Awesome Planets: New Results from NASA Missions to Pluto, Mars, Saturn and Earth’s Other Siblings.

Join us to find our more about colors as we celebrate National Chemistry Week at the Stingrays game on October 18. This event is presented by the College of Charleston School of Science and Mathematics, specifically the Department of Chemistry and the Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity, and the Charleston Stingrays Hockey team. Experience hands-on activities and demonstrations and then enjoy the hockey game against the Atlanta Gladiators.

Join Keep Charleston Beautiful and the College of Charleston for a professional development opportunity for teachers, focused on marine debris in the environment. Using an inquiry based approach, this workshop will include hands-on activities while meeting 2014 SC science standards. The workshop will examine the impacts of marine debris and discuss possible solutions.

Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math is partnering with Engaging Creative Minds, Chucktown Squash, and the Department of Health and Human and Performance to offer a Summer STEAM Institute for students in grades 3-8 at the College of Charleston. Summer STEAM Institute is designed for creative and energetic students in grades 3-8 who want to spend their summer engaged in unique learning experiences that foster creativity and problem solving alongside local artists, cultural organizations, and professionals in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. No experience necessary! Register for any or all of the individual week sessions running weekdays from June 15th – July 24th. Themes change each week so no two weeks are the same.

June 15-19 So You Think You Can Fly? Force, Motion, and Superheroes with Annex Dance Company, musician Tom Noren using Garage Band, Charleston Stage, and visual sculptures with Deborah Meyer.
June 22-26 Go Green with Team STEAM! Environmental Science with Annex Dance Company, jazz musician Ann Caldwell, Storytree Theater, and visual artists Art Buzz Kids.
June 29-July 3 Outta this world! Blast off STEAM! Planetary Science with dance artist from the Charleston Performing Arts Center, world music musician William DeHaro Kinard, Charleston Stage, and visual artist Meg Mims with Heal with Hearts.
July 6-July 10 Junior Engineers: Dream, Design, and Build! Engineering with dance artist Addy Gant from Heal with Hearts, music with Charleston Performing Arts Center, Storytree Theater, and move-able art with visual artist Kathleen Fox.
July 13-July 17 Rhythm, Robots and RAM! Computer Science with dance artist Erin Leigh, musician Tom Noren using Garage Band, Charleston Stage, and puppet maker Becky Becker.
July 20-July 24 Potions in Motion! Chemistry with dance artist Georgia Haygood, musician TBA, Charleston Stage, and visual artist Kristy Bishop.

Summer STEAM is located at the College of Charleston. Camp hours are 8:30-4:00 with extended day option and breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks included in the price each day. Cost is $200 per week for individual weeks or $175 per week if registering for 3 or more weeks.

At Summer STEAM, campers will study with at least 4 different ECM arts and cultural partners each week, as well as a number of STEM professionals. Students are grouped age appropriately with an 8:1 student to certified teacher ratio. Fridays are dedicated to Think Tank Challenges in which community professionals engage students in solving real world problems.

Rev. Rutledge, from the Circular Congregational Church, will reflect on how Darwin’s discoveries have opened up new ways of thinking about ourselves, our lives, our ethics and spirituality. Our understanding of cosmic and natural evolution may help us move beyond the narrow confines of anthropocentrism to a richer, fuller view of life.

Teaching the Controversy? A Conversation on Science Education and Religious Conviction
From the fall of 2013 through most of 2014, the agencies responsible for developing the science curriculum of South Carolina were deadlocked over High School Standard H.B.5, Biological Evolution. Do controversies of this sort originate from a legitimate scientific challenge to modern evolutionary theory? Or do they arise from political ideologies or competing religious convictions? And what place should “teaching the controversy” have in the public school science curriculum? Join representatives of the religious and educational communities for a public conversation exploring these questions.

Join the Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math on February 7, 2015 at the Charleston STEM Festival. During the festival kick-off, children and families will view exhibits and participate in interactive demonstrations hosted by local industries, non-profits and educational institutions. In the two weeks following the event, our community supporters will be hosting a wide variety of events around town, including workshops, lectures, and open houses.

The festival kick-off on Saturday, February 7, 2015 is a one-day (10am-3pm) interactive event at Brittlebank Park that will highlight the many STEM education initiatives in the area.
