Math 120: Introductory Calculus

This page has a few resources for the course Introductory Calculus (Math 120) that I often teach. Note that if you are currently enrolled in that course with me, there is far more information at the OAKS site for it, via lms.cofc.edu

Which version of the text to get?

The first question that a lot of student have is Which version of the text should I get?, and the bookstore website makes this hard by using some confusing jargon about “package components”.  What that means is that in addition to the text, you need to access to the WebAssign online homework system, and some versions of the text come bundled with that access, so they are trying to warn you against buying a bundle that includes WebAssign access and then also separately purchasing WebAssign access.  Unfortunately, the bookstore website does not make it clear which versions of the text include WebAssign access!

For most students, I think that the best options are either to buy the loose-leaf version of the text or get a second-hand copy of the book, and then separately purchase WebAssign access.  That way, you can wait until ten days into the semester before purchasing WebAssign access, and so have time to check if you need to buy it at all.

Syllabus and Study Guides

In addition to the syllabus, I provide a study guide with a couple of pages per class, summarizing the main material and recommending examples to read and exercises to do.  It is best to download and read these, along with the corresponding sections of the text, before the class where it is covered!

Here they are for about the first week of classes (beyond that, enrolled students can get them from the OAKS site for the course at lms.cofc.edu):
