Academic publishing in the internet era

This page will be about proposals to reform academic publishing, both course materials and original research, to take advantage of new technologies and break down the cost barriers of obsolete models such as the high costs imposed by traditional academic publishing companies.

The first few topics will be

  • electronic books, and the debate over industry standard formats like ePub vs the single source formats such as for Kindle books and iBooks 2 text materials.
  • academic journals and the coercion of libraries into excessive spending for online journals by publishers such as Elsevier.

On the latter topic, I suggest reading the comments of Tim Gowers, Terry Tao and comments at the former site.
