The Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) recently recognized LACS-Spanish double major Leasette León with its Outstanding Student Award for having the highest cumulative GPA in the program, a testament to the first-generation student’s dedication to excel in college.

LACSaCast Episode 2 – Arden Sherman ’05

Dr. Avendaño, Director of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, interviews CofC alumna (2005) Arden Sherman to discuss her undergraduate experience at the College of Charleston as a double major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Studio Art, her time studying abroad in Brazil and Cuba, and her professional activities following graduation. At the time of the podcast, Arden is the Director and Curator of Hunter East Harlem Gallery at Hunter College in New York City.

Dr. Avendaño took the opportunity to sit down with three LACS majors the week before graduation to find out how the LACS major impacted their lives and what they plan on doing after graduation. The conversation features:

  • Susan Dempsey is from Clemson, SC. She is graduating in May 2019 with a double major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Spanish.
  • Jordan Vogt is from Greenville, SC. She is graduating in May 2019 with a double major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Political Science with a Minor in Spanish as well.
  • Harmony Baggett is from Charleston, SC. She is graduating in May 2019 with a major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
