By Monica Lavin
Posted on 10 August 2015 | 11:59 am

*At this time, Information Technology will postpone the MyCharleston Password Recovery Implementation that was originally scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday August 19th, until after the start of classes. We will keep the campus informed of the new implementation date.

We are excited to announce an upcoming improvement to your MyCharleston password recovery experience. We are implementing a functionality that will allow you to manually recover your Cougars password by answering a series of questions. You will no longer need to contact Helpdesk to recover or reset your Cougars password. This new functionality also improves the security of the password recovery process.

When Information Technology implements this new functionality, you will be asked to complete your recovery profile when you first log into MyCharleston. You’ll be asked to answer a series of eight questions.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • You will only have to set up your recovery profile once.
  • If you forget your password, you’ll be prompted to answer two of the eight questions to recover your password manually.
  • The login process will not change.
  • All eight questions must be answered.
  • No duplicate answers will be accepted.

If you have any questions, please contact the IT Helpdesk at (843) 953-3375 or by emailing Helpdesk@cofc.edu.

MyCharleston Service Disruption Analysis

May 1, 2014 MyCharleston Service Disruption Analysis

Summary: On May 1, 2014 at 4:30pm, Information Technology received a report that students were having issues logging into MyCharleston. As a result, IT immediately looked into the issue. All three of the MyCharleston servers were functioning properly and servicing users. IT discovered that one of the web servers, which houses campus applications, was showing a long login time. As a result, some users were experiencing slow response times when accessing MyCharleston. At 6:06PM, the three web servers were restarted. At 6:23PM, the system administrator reported that all applications were functioning normally. Full recovery was achieved by 6:23pm on May 1, 2014.

Quick Tip: Since the possibility is low that all three of MyCharleston web servers would be experiencing a problem at the same time, users should be instructed by Helpdesk to clear their browser cache and try again or try to connect using a different browser. If a user does not clear the browser cache between login attempts to MyCharleston, the system will repeatedly try to reach the same server. If that server is experiencing issues, the user will not be able to login even though there may be other web servers available that are functioning normally.

Cause: This service disruption occurred during finals week when faculty, staff and students heavily use MyCharleston. A definitive cause is currently unknown; however, IT will proactively monitor the web servers for similar login errors while researching possible causes.

Prevention: IT will proactively monitor the web servers for similar login errors while researching possible causes. In addition, IT will continue to pursue installation of the newer, more stable, version of MyCharleston as expeditiously as possible.

IT is Helping Streamline Business Processes

Adding Function to Forms

Information Technology continues to streamline business processes at the College with the launch of the MyForms tab in MyCharleston. Through the implementation of an enterprise framework to support web forms and workflow, many processes that were once paper-based and manual can now be processed online with automated workflow features to track and forward common requests. Several Faculty, Human Resources, and the Registrar’s Office forms are currently available with more on the way. Forms are restricted by roles, so users only see the forms that are accessible to them. The new forms went into production in October 2013 and have been well received with approvers noting good usage statistics.

Highlights include:

  • 1700 Registrar’s Office web forms have been submitted and processed successfully
  • 450 Human Resources Teaching Effort web forms have been submitted and processed successfully
  • 10,854 students have completed the Financial Responsibility Agreement for the Spring 2014 term

Check out the MyForms tab the next time you login to MyCharleston and see how web forms and workflow are helping to change the way the College does business.
