Archives For Emergency Preparedness

As College leadership continues to monitor and prepare for potential inclement weather from Hurricane Michael, and to ensure that you receive future CougarAlert notifications by your preferred method, we ask that you please log into MyCharleston and review your CougarAlert settings. CougarAlert is the emergency notification system the College uses to send important information to students, faculty, staff and parents.

If you are not currently receiving text messages from the CougarAlert system and would like to, please visit the ‘Update Your Phones for CougarAlert’ link located in the CougarAlert channel under the MyAccounts tab in MyCharleston (see PDF instructions). If your cell phone number is not listed or is designated as anything except ‘Cell Phone with Text,’ you will not receive text messages.

To change this, insert a new entry with your cell phone number. Click ‘Insert a New Telephone Number Not Listed Above’ and make sure that Phone Type it is set to ‘Cell Phone with Text.’

If you have questions or concerns, you can reach the Helpdesk by phone at 843.953.3375 or through the portal at https://help.cofc.edu/.

Since the hurricane season is currently upon us, we encourage you to review the IT hurricane preparedness guides for faculty, staff and students available on our website. Each guide outlines 5 steps to help you prepare for a hurricane (from an IT perspective).

Highlights include:

  • Updating your CougarAlert contact information
  • Protecting your computer equipment
  • Familiarizing yourself with applications that may be down during and immediately after a hurricane
  • Saving your College-related data to the U:drive and/or an encrypted USB flash drive

The guides are sure to provide you with new and important information. You can access the respective guides below:

These guides outline the steps that IT takes for Disaster Recovery. IT refers to Disaster Recovery as the process and procedures that are related to preparing for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure only. It’s important for departments to be familiar with their own business continuity plans if campus applications and/or systems are down. IT will help you formulate and implement your business continuity plans to the extent possible upon request.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Information Technology Helpdesk at (843) 953-3375 or by emailing helpdesk@cofc.edu. And we also encourage you to review the readiness guidelines for personal safety at http://www.ready.gov/hurricanes.
