Marriage has evolved over the centuries- Charleston Post and Courier

Von Bakanic, a sociology professor at the College of Charleston, said the state of marriage always has been in flux, subject to economic forces and changing social values.

 

Cohabitation rates are up in the U.S. for a few reasons, she said. People looking for love sometimes agree to a trial period before committing to marriage; others already are committed to the idea and begin to live together before the knot is officially tied; still others chose cohabitation as an alternative to marriage.
