Deborah Wright: Avery reference archivist pursues lifelong interest in black history- Charleston Post and Courier

Q: Who would you consider to be the most significant African-American woman in history?

A: There are so many important and significant women in African-American history during the different eras that it’s really hard to determine the most significant, but Harriet Tubman came to mind first. Born into slavery, and after escaping from that, Mrs. Tubman returned to the slave zones at great danger to herself, to bring other enslaved persons to freedom. She was a leader. She was fearless and courageous under the most extreme of circumstances. So in my opinion, Mrs. Tubman’s significance does not necessarily deal with the quantity of people she brought out of slavery (which didn’t total more than 100), but with her selflessness, fearlessness and courage. She exemplifies the whole notion of “stepping out on faith!”
