The College of Charleston, established in 1770, is a major university with more than 12,000 students attending classes at the downtown campus in the George Street area. Take a 75-minute walking tour of campus with a student guide. You’ll learn about life there, as well as the history behind some of the buildings, including Randolph Hall, the oldest continually used public building in the nation. During the school year, tours are at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. weekdays, plus an occasional Saturday. Reservations are recommended. Like stargazing? Starting in September, the College of Charleston Observatory hosts First Fridays, in which the observatory and observation deck are open for free to the public, 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m., the first Friday of every month. Details: 843-953-2031.

Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, also on campus, is free to visit and open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Its current exhibition, featuring artist Nick Cave, run through June 26. Details: 843-953-5680; http://halsey.cofc.edu.
