Details: The Paid Student Internship Program is part of the Department’s commitment to fostering diversity within its ranks and encouraging individuals from underrepresented groups to explore student and career opportunities.  This program aims to provide students from diverse backgrounds in post-secondary degree programs with exposure to various careers in U.S. foreign policy programs and the administration of the U.S. Department of State, both domestically and at diplomatic missions worldwide.

Celebrate Black History Month at CofC with These Opportunities Including Private Dinners with Speakers!

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate, CofC is hosting tons of events and opportunities, including the Office of Institutional Diversity’s Signature Speaker Series!

The Series: Three South Carolina professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences will be featured; each presentation is open to the public and will take place in SSMB 129 at 5:30pm on the dates indicated.

Essay Details: After each public presentation, the Office of Institutional Diversity will host a private dinner with the speaker and a small group of students. Any student interested in having dinner with the speaker is invited to submit an essay explaining your career goals, why you would like to have dinner with the speaker and what you hope to learn. Please submit a separate essay for each speaker. Essays should be submitted to oid@cofc.edu by the deadlines indicated below. Selected students will be notified via email.

  • SC Senator Deon Tedder, recently elected and youngest member of the SC Senate, will present about diversity in higher education and civic engagement on February 12th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 5th.
  • Dr. Dante Pelzer, Associate Director of Student Diversity at MUSC, will present about diversity and under-representation in the health professions on February 20th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 13th.

Apply to Join the HOPE Lab for a Research Opportunity With Dolphins!

Dr. Leslie Hart is seeking a research assistant to help with a NIH-funded study investigating microplastic and phthalate exposure in wild bottlenose dolphins and their prey!

The Opportunity: Undergraduate students involved in this study will participate in fieldwork with the project lead, assist with sample preparation (including fish dissection), assist a graduate student with laboratory analyses of fish and bottlenose dolphin samples, perform literature searches and reviews, curate databases, and assist with statistical analyses and the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations.

Research Assistant Job Description

Undergraduate students involved in this study will participate in fieldwork with the project lead (Dr. Leslie Hart, Public Health), assist with sample preparation (including fish dissection), assist a graduate student with laboratory analyses of fish and bottlenose dolphin samples, perform literature searches and reviews, curate databases, and assist with statistical analyses and the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations. The project team will meet weekly to set monthly goals, assess project needs, evaluate project status, discuss challenges, schedule deliverables, and review topic-related journal articles. Training on statistical methods and scientific methods will occur throughout the academic year during these weekly meetings.

Students interested in this project should be prepared to assist with research starting in spring 2024. Preference will be given to students interested in assisting for the 2024-2025 academic year (including summer 2024). Because sample collection, processing, and analysis will occur throughout the year, students must be able to dedicate 10 hours per week during the academic year and 20 hours per week during the summer months, at $11/hr.

  • Research assistants will be expected to commit 10 hours per week during the academic year and 20 hours per week in the summer
  • Research assistants will be expected to travel (domestically) for fieldwork (funding will be provided)

Paid Summer Scholars Fellowship for Children’s Research at MUSC

MUSC’s Darby Children’s Research Institute is offering the John Covington and Robert Lukey summer scholarship, which provides undergrads the opportunity to perform pediatric clinical and basic science research.

The Opportunity: The scholarship provides summer funding for trainees to gain exposure to a clinical and basic science pediatric research environment in a nationally ranked academic medical center that will advance their career aspirations.

  • Recipients will receive a summer stipend in the amount of $4,000 (plus $1,000 for consumable lab supplies), with the potential to continue performing research during the following school year.

The John Covington and Robert Lukey Summer Scholarship in the MUSC Darby Children’s Research Institute

PURPOSE

The purpose of The John Covington and Robert Lukey Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to perform pediatric clinical and basic science research.

OVERVIEW

The Darby Children's Research Institute (DCRI) is the research arm of the Department of Pediatrics and the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The DCRI is comprised of basic and physician scientists working together with a common goal to perform impactful science that can be translated for the wellness of children’s health. The DCRI is composed of state-of-the-art laboratories with faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students spanning multiple disciplines in childhood health and disease.

The primary objective of The John Covington and Robert Lukey Scholarship is to provide funding for undergraduate students with strong interests to gain exposure to a clinical and basic science pediatric research experience in a nationally ranked academic medical center that will advance their career aspirations.

HONS 100: Beyond George Street (BGS) Peer Facilitator Job Description

The Honors College is seeking Honors students to serve as Peer Facilitators for the HONS 100: Beyond George Street course to be taught in Fall 2024. Students will be selected based on individual BGS performance, review of the application, statement of interest, and interview.

Selected students will be required to complete the PF training course through the Center for Excellence in Peer Education during Spring 2024 or at the beginning of Fall 2024. The course will be offered at the following times.

Spring 2024 – Express II TEDU 205-02 (20769) TR 3:05 PM-4:45 PM

Fall 2024 – Express I TEDU 205 MW 3:00 PM – 4:40 PM

*Students will receive 2 credit hours for the course and may choose from either of the times above.

Peer Facilitators will commit to at least 7 hours per week in Fall 2024, including class meeting time and one BGS Team meeting per week. Students will be paid $10/hour.

The Peer Facilitator Application Deadline is Thursday, February 1st at 5 PM. Applications can be downloaded directly from the HUB and should be submitted to Honors@cofc.edu as pdfs.

Peer Facilitator Requirements:

  • Member of the Honors College in good standing
  • Either currently enrolled or completed Honors First Year Experience (BGS and Honors Engaged)
  • Availability to take Spring or Fall 2024 Express training course at one of the times listed above
  • Attend Spring 2024 retreat (April 13, 2024) and Fall 2024 retreat (August 15, 2024)
  • Willingness to plan Fall 2024 schedule to accommodate Honors BGS (this includes keeping the time for our weekly team meeting open and keeping the period before and after the assigned class meeting time open)
  • No more than 15 hours of course load in Fall 2024 (negotiable in some cases; not including TEDU 205)
  • No more than 15 hours of outside activities – including other jobs/clubs/sports

Preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Those with a GPA of 3.4 or higher
  • Those with exemplary work when they were BGS students
  • Those who plan to take no more than 15 hours in Fall 2024
  • Those who have reasonable time commitments in Fall 2024 that do not detract from BGS PF responsibilities
