HONS 102-01 Exploring Ideas in Community: Using Creative Writing Concepts to Enhance your Communication Skills
Professor Nick Plasmati
M 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (one-credit course)
Every time you write, post, comment, text, or tweet, you are in conversation with your audience. Whether that’s an audience of a few hundred followers or the lone recipient of a throwaway text, the act of sharing your written words creates a community between writer and reader.
In this discussion and practice-based creative writing course, we will explore the interplay between our words and those who read them. Students will hone their communication skills—as both writers and readers—to better understand how the written word impacts the communities in which we coexist. Real world applications (e.g., journalism, professional writing, community outreach, social media marketing) will be examined, particularly those with connections to Charleston and the Carolina lowcountry. Introductory creative writing concepts will be used as foundational tools with which to enhance students’ writing skills on everything from emails, resumes, cover letters, promotional material, texts, Instagram captions, and more.
Writers of all skill levels and inclinations are welcome. The class will meet weekly for one hour on Monday evenings. Those interested in the course are encouraged to contact the instructor (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information about how to register.
