Fall 2022 First Year Experience Courses

The Honors College is a community, and all incoming Honors College students shared in a communal First Year Experience comprised of two formative academic experiences: Beyond George Street and Honors Engaged.

  • All Honors students are required to complete HONS 100 Beyond George Street during their first semester in the Honors College
  • All Honors students complete HONS 101 Honors Engaged over the course of their first year at the College

A course that welcomes freshmen in the Honors First-Year Learning Community into the honors experience by introducing them to faculty and peers through small-group discussion, one-on-one mentoring, and community engagement. Students explore opportunities and academic interests, ultimately creating the basis for a professional portfolio. Upper-level Honors students serve as mentors. Required for first semester freshmen in the Honors College.

HONS 101: Honors Engaged

HONS 101 Honors Engaged

Honors Engaged takes students Beyond George Street by engaging them in meaningful experiential opportunities outside of the classroom addressing critical issues such as literacy, affordable housing, food security, environmental sustainability, and justice. Civic engagement is supported by in-class workshops and guided reflection exercises, uniting action and academic exploration. Honors Engaged seeks to raise awareness of critical issues and serve specific needs in the Charleston area and beyond.
