Taking A Step Back

Do you ever get caught up in the hustle and bustle of just getting to class? Making sure you leave your house on time, making sure you have your books and laptop, trying to avoid traffic, finding a parking place, racing to your building. Well, I do. I realized lately that during the school year I was so caught up with class and work that I didn’t really take in the beauty of Charleston. So, this past week, I have been trying to really pay attention to the trees and architecture throughout the city while I walk to work. After all, that is one thing that inspired me to attend this school!

I have always loved Charleston for its historic nature and inherent beauty. I have been coming to this city since I was very young, and I was always mesmerized by it.  I couldn’t think of a more perfect city, not to mention that it is right next to not one, but three different beaches! When I moved here a year ago, I promised myself that I would never lose my appreciation for the city. Unfortunately, life got in the way. School, stress, meeting friends, trying to have a life, marathon training, and many other excuses got in the way. But I have now made a new promise to myself. I am going to stop overlooking the beauty of this city. I am going to recognize that it is often the small things in life that can bring a smile to my face or cheer me up if I am having a bad day. And these small things are embedded in the city I live in. So if I get too stressed or overwhelmed this semester, I will just take a step back and go for a walk outside to appreciate this city and to remember what motivated me to move here in the first place!

I agree Megs! It’s easy to get caught up in our lives and forget to stop and smell the flowers. We are lucky to live in such a special place! 🙂
