A new degree for aspiring teachers

What a better way to start a new season than to offer a brand new program. Together with The Citadel Graduate College, The Graduate School of the College of Charleston is excited to present a new graduate program: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Middle Grades.

Leading to initial teaching certification, the MAT in Middle Grades prepares you to lead a classroom of students in grades five through eight with a focus on English, mathematics, science or social science. Starting from the foundation you created with your studies at the undergraduate level, the faculty in this program will shape an educational experience that will prepare you to lead a classroom. You will explore your content area through a structured sequence of courses focused on teaching methods and subject content, and also sequenced field experiences.

As I mentioned previously, this is a joint program between The Citadel and the College of Charleston. To clarify, you will take classes at, and earn a master’s degree from, both institutions. This means you have access to double the resources: faculty, libraries, colleagues, etc. Before applying, you will consider which institution will be your “home.” Whichever you choose, whether it’s The Citadel or the College of Charleston, you will apply to that school, pay that school’s tuition, and register for classes through that school’s system.

We encourage you to reach out to us to learn more. Dr. Angela Cozart is the College of Charleston director for the MAT in Middle Grades, and Dr. Kathryn Richardson Jones is the director at The Citadel.
