English Major Alex Worthy on Dublin, Death Masks, and Disappearing Credit Cards

Congratulations to Alex Worthy, whose essay “Bloom’s Footsteps: My Own Dublin Odyssey” has just been published at Hackwriters.com.  Worthy, an English major, originally wrote her piece for a class assignment in Dr. Devet’s English Advanced Composition course. Worthy’s publication continues a record of success that Dr. Devet has had in helping her students find their voice in print beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on her publication, Worthy writes that “it feels great now that my writing is out there for others to see and read. It makes everything seem so much more real. It makes me want to write more things to submit. In short, it feels awesome!”

In her essay, Worthy describes her adventures in Dublin during a trip she made while studying abroad in Nottingham. The story recounts certain misadventures as she tires to retrace the footsteps of Joyce’s character Leopold Bloom. Early in the essay, Worthy describes the quite Dublin streets: “Yawning workers dusted the shelves of tourist shops lining the street; a few of the cafés already emitted a warm, smoky aroma. Dawn is the only time you can see a city like that.” As the account unfolds, Worthy blends the momentous and the mundane, from Joyce’s death mask and a missing credit card.
