Position Description:  This position is responsible for meeting short- and long-term goals related to advancing, promoting and supporting Simpson University. The SID is primarily responsible for publicizing and promoting the athletic program and student-athletes at Simpson University.  This includes maintaining the SU Athletics Website, overseeing the department’s marketing functions, writing feature stories and news releases on deadline, responding to information requests, managing department records, photography, videography, social media, and handling other duties as assigned.  In carrying out these and other assigned duties, the SID operates in a team environment and will have regular interactions with students, coaches, faculty, staff, news media representatives, parents and visitors.  Such interactions, especially during assignments, will have a significant effect on the perceived image of the university

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Professional training/experience with writing and editing, photo and web software programs and using a camera preferred
  • Strong computer application and relational database management skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) along with willingness and aptitude to learn new software applications
  • At least three years of progressive financial, creative, editorial and supervisory responsibility
  • Strong computer creative application skills and knowledge of social media channels
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, works well independently and in a team environment
  • Works well under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Experience in developing and managing local, regional and national media relationships
  • Must be able to multi-task and quickly solve problems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Essential Functions:  

  • Responsible for providing releases on athletes and teams to local media following athletic events.The SID is responsible for giving news sources the facts and representing the athletics program and university in a positive manner with the goal of increasing coverage within local media outlets
  • Maintain and edit SU Athletics Website, promoting all intercollegiate athletic teams, with emphasis on rosters, schedules, team news, history, coaching staff, forms, and interactive features
  • Responsible for creating, proof reading, editing and publishing a variety of internal/external communications, including feature stories, game/event recaps, season preview/reviews, recruit signings, and other media releases. Management of student employees and/or student intern(s) and a master communication schedule
  • Responsible for ensuring the capture of individual and team photos, action photos and other photos related to the athletic department, as well as the organization and archiving of all department photos and the distribution to media, campus departments, and other entities
  • Manage the athletic department’s primary accounts on a variety of social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram at minimum).Create and consistently update a social media strategy, which best places SU athletics in social communication. Train and assist the coaching staff in managing team specific social media accounts, takes the lead in monitoring student-athlete social media activity, and facilitates education of student-athletes and coaching staff on the benefits of social media
  • Responsible for securing video footage of game and special event action and create usable highlight packages (game, season, and/or event recap).This can be facilitated via coach’s game tapes, student employees, interns, or utilizing other resources.Assist with oversight of live video streaming of home events, including soccer, volleyball, softball, and basketball
  • Coordinate the creation of all materials distributed from the athletic department and its teams, including camp and fundraising brochures, schedule and event promotional posters, web graphics, and game programs

Related Responsibilities:  

  • Supervise staff and student interns to help carry out duties, including writing, photography, videography, graphic design, statistical work and updates of the SU Athletics Website
  • Work with staff, student employees, and coaches to ensure the collection of in-game statistics.Also ensure that all League and NAIA policies regarding reporting of statistics and forms are met
  • Coordinate efforts with SU Marketing department as a resource and for consistency across all departments of Simpson University. All proceeds are to be deposited into Simpson University finance office and all checks and bills paid through Simpson University athletic department. Gifts other than advertising flow through the donor receipting process in Advancement
  • Be a resource for any future athletic development projects with the athletic administration and Simpson university administration
  • Assist with the nomination of student-athletes, coaches, and staff for League, NAIA, and other awards, including respective coaches associations, CoSIDA, and various governing bodies
  • Maintain historical files and compile season reports for records
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Athletics and other department staff to ensure a unified strategic communication plan is in place and coordinated in all areas
  • Adequately maintain work equipment and promptly report defects and/or malfunctions
  • Make recommendations for equipment and software purchases and for professional development and training
