NEW Leadership South Carolina Summer Institute

The College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy at Winthrop University have collaborated in providing students with an exciting new leadership opportunity in 2014. The second annual NEW Leadership™ South Carolina Summer Institute is designed to teach women leadership skills, provide an opportunity to interact with leaders in local/state/national politics, and expose them to public affairs so that they might consider careers in public service.

Despite recent gains, South Carolina ranks 49th in the nation in the percentage of women in its state legislature, and women are underrepresented on public boards and commissions. It is essential that the next generation of women is ready to serve in every facet of public life.

Approximately 30 college women will be chosen for the NEW Leadership™ South Carolina class of 2014. The principal criterion for selection is interest in, and commitment to, women’s political leadership. We encourage women of all ideological perspectives, fields of study, regions of the state, ages, and racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds to apply. Undergraduates attending college in South Carolina or South Carolinians attending college elsewhere are eligible. The program is open to undergraduates and graduate students.

The Summer Institute will be held on the Winthrop University campus in Rock Hill SC from May 17-21, 2014.
