BNSF Railway: Seeks Corporate Communications Intern (Summer 2021)

Position Summary:  (This is a paid internship.) The Summer Internship Program provides interns an opportunity to learn more about how our efficient, safe and “green” rail network supports the global supply chain. Interns participate in group events and projects, experiencing first-hand what it is like to be a full-time BNSF employee. Operating one of the largest railroads in North America, we have countless opportunities for interns to develop their skills, create new ideas and even travel!

The program begins with an extensive corporate orientation in Fort Worth, Texas. During the training period, interns receive a company overview and interact with company leaders. Following orientation, interns receive on-the-job training according to their assigned group.

Relocation assistance may be provided to interns who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their permanent residence.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

This position plays a key role in the Compliance Department’s fraud-investigation and prevention efforts. The position is responsible for:
  • Investigating allegations of misconduct.  This position conducts investigations into alleged fraud, waste, or misuse of company resources. Carrying out these investigations requires the investigator to critically analyze complex facts and business processes (such as procurement, disbursement, travel expense, timekeeping, and payroll). This includes managing multiple investigations simultaneously, documenting evidence and communicating results of investigations to senior leadership through written reports and/or verbal briefings.
  • Leveraging technology to detect and deter fraud or abuse. Carrying out this responsibility requires understanding how various information systems work and designing and/or implementing high-tech solutions to deter fraud and abuse within those systems.

Skill Sets: 

Strong analytical skills are critical to this position because it requires:
  • conducting investigations;
  • interpreting and analyzing evidence;
  • identifying unusual or suspicious patterns, trends, or red flags that warrant further investigation;
  • maintaining confidentiality;
  • managing multiple projects simultaneously;
  • using financial and business acumen to quickly understand and complex business processes;
  • risk-assessing business process, prioritizing identified risks, and recommending controls to mitigate risks (for example, recommending appropriate operational internal controls).
Strong communication skills are critical to this position because it requires:
  • conducting witness interviews;
  • communicating within the Compliance Department; and
  • drafting detailed investigation reports.

Working Conditions: 

  • Primarily an office environment with some field activities.
  • Normal office hours, five days per week with weekend or evening work as required.
  • Extended hours may be required on occasion.

Specific Requirement: 

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 for engineering majors OR cumulative GPA of 3.0 for non-engineering majors.
  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or graduate degree program at an accredited university at the time of application and throughout the duration of the internship.
  • Less than three (3) years of work experience in a professional work environment.  When calculating work experience, EXCLUDE internships or positions held while in high school or college.
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Ability to relocate to Fort Worth, TX for the summer.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Pursuit of a degree in one of the following:
  • Accounting or Finance
  • Management Infrmation Systems, Computer Science, or Computer Networking
  • Transprtation Logistics
  • Other Business-related degree
  • Previous work experience in related field
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (specifically Outlook, Excel, Word, and Power Point)
  • Proven leadership experience and excellent oral and written communication skills
