Aalen, located in southwestern Germany at the base of the Swabian Alps in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Its origins can be traced back to the Roman Empire at which a large Roman fort existed. Ruins of the old Roman limes (frontier wall) still exist. Today, Aalen is a communications center that celebrates its industries of optics, machinery, textile, and paper. There is almost 25% of Germany’s research and development capacity existing in Baden-Wurttemberg. Baden-Wurttemberg has many universities, most of which are internationally renowned.
