CofC in Panama: Global Logistics and Transportation (Summer)

With the Panama Canal Expansion project now completed, global trade will be profoundly impacted in the areas of global logistics, distribution and transportation as well as real estate development and infrastructure. The study tour will include lectures by global experts in economic development and commerce as well as site visits to the Canal, international companies, and new multi-use commercial real estate developments. CofC in Hong Kong: Supply Chain Management (Summer)

Students choose from SCIM 360 (Lean Process in Asian Ports) or TRAN 360 (Global Logistics in a Major Asian Port: The Case of Hong Kong). Lean logistics, like lean manufacturing, focuses on the four walls of a structure and within a domestic organization. This time the distribution center, instead of a factory. There are many suppliers and many logistics service providers in a supply chain. Some of these are visible; some are less visible. Many suppliers or logistics service firms do not practice lean. Taking lean outside the four walls of the company into other firms brings global complexity into the challenge of implementing and becoming lean. FYE: Fire & Ice: Exploring Iceland (Spring Break)

Fire & Ice: Exploring Iceland will provide a more in-depth, hands-on look at the dynamic processes forming the island of Iceland and the native culture. We will explore active volcanoes, glaciers and other geomorphic features, taste local food and more. Key geologic activities include visits to active volcanoes and glaciers in two of Iceland’s National Parks and hikes to two waterfalls and a black pebble (volcanic) beach. A visit to a geothermal plant and a native fishing village will provide insight into how the Icelanders have learned to live in such a dynamic environment. FYE: The Scottish Play: Macbeth, Edinburgh and the Highlands (Spring Break)

Experience the city of Edinburgh and tour Macbeth country and the Highlands. We will explore and compare Shakespeare’s imagined Scotland and the historical Scotland of the 11th century ruler known as the Red King. We could not pick a better place to explore the dramaturgy of Macbeth and its historical facts, fictions, and superstitions. CofC in Belgium and Netherlands: Finance (Spring Break)

FINC 360 is a semester long, interdisciplinary, study abroad course that requires students to financially analyze costs related to a publicly traded beer firm’ s logistics and supply chain processes. The course requires finance and other business school majors to work with global logistics minors over an entire semester to complete a financial analysis of a publicly traded firm in the brewing industry that relies heavily on shipping transportation. The highlight of the course is the study abroad component in the Netherlands and Belgium that introduces students to several Port Authority financial and logistics managers in addition to executives at institutions that provide external financing to global companies such as Heineken that use ship transportation for the flow of goods. The University of Cape Coast is one of the rare sea front universities in the world, sitting on a hill that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It is located five kilometers west of Cape Coast and operates on two campuses: the Southern Campus (Old Site) and the Northern Campus (New Site). Cape Coast is the capital of the Central Region, in southern Ghana. It’s known for its role in the transatlantic slave trade and is home to a rich history and many monuments. University of Southern Mississippi (USM)

The British Studies Program, founded in 1976, is organized by Southern Miss through an academic consortium of colleges and universities. The program offers ten to fifteen different courses in various disciplines. Students will take one course and earn six credit hours through lectures taught by British scholars, artists, business leaders, and government officials, and through field excursions to various locations in and around London. On British Studies, London becomes the students’ classroom as they experience their subject first-hand and conduct research supervised by their professor.
