CofC in British Virgin Islands: Geology (Summer)

Earn CofC credit living on the 80 foot Burger Research Vessel Manta where you will navigate through the islands, channels, and highly varied geological conditions of the US and British Virgin Islands. In this unique experience you will study the environmental stresses on highly populated islands, starkly contrasted to the unpopulated islands, and the diverse differences in the areas apparent. From every rock and beach type, to desalinization plants and wind farms, you will be exposed and experience a wide variety of landscapes and activities. The resiliency of the areas to sea level rise, hurricanes, and water resources provides an excellent backdrop for the foci of the course. CofC in Scotland: Art History (Summer)

College of Charleston students will be immersed in a practical preservation skills building environment that has been developed by the Prince of Wales. Dumfries House is home for the Prince’s Foundation (https://dumfries-house.org.uk/blog/page/188/the-princes-foundation-a-new-beginning). In Glasgow and Edinburgh, through interactive tours and drawing exercises, students will gain a knowledge of historic architecture and will come to understand historic preservation efforts in various contexts from the local to World Heritage. Practical exercises on the Dumfries House campus will give students first-hand experiences in traditional crafts such as black-smithing, thatching and stone masonry all with an eye towards utilizing these skills in applications on projects at home and abroad. CofC in Poland, Germany, Netherlands: Jewish Studies (Summer)

This program will take students to a part of the world where Nazi Germany carried out the “final solution to the Jewish question” under the cover of World War II. Poland was home to some three-and-a-half million Jews, 90 per cent of whom died in the genocide we call the Holocaust. Another two million Jews from every corner of Europe were transported to extermination centers such as Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Chelmno—three places we will visit in Poland. In Krakow and Warsaw, we will tour former Jewish neighborhoods and visit museums, synagogues, and churches, and hold joint classes with Polish students. In Berlin and Amsterdam, we will tour the old Jewish neighborhoods, assess the meaning and impact of memorials to the dead, and sample the dynamic nightlife of the cities. This program is designed to enlighten students regarding the international nature of neuroscience research and the vast research opportunities and collaborations that are possible in today’s scientific community. More specifically, the goal of the program is to expose students to neuroscience research and training conducted by the consortium of the German Schools of Neuroscience (GSN) through an intensive four-week neuroscience seminar experience. The program will visit two GSN campuses: Charité Medical University in Berlin and Ludwig Maximilians Universitat in Munich. Students choose from SCIM 360 (Lean Process in Asian Ports) or TRAN 360 (Global Logistics in a Major Asian Port: The Case of Hong Kong). Lean logistics, like lean manufacturing, focuses on the four walls of a structure and within a domestic organization. This time the distribution center, instead of a factory. There are many suppliers and many logistics service providers in a supply chain. Some of these are visible; some are less visible. Many suppliers or logistics service firms do not practice lean. Taking lean outside the four walls of the company into other firms brings global complexity into the challenge of implementing and becoming lean. Examine a wide variety of habitats including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, rocky shores, wet and dry caves, riparian systems, tropical rainforest, and cloud forest. Options are a combined lecture/lab course in General Ecology (BIOL 341) or Tropical Ecology (BIOL 250) that will take place for the majority of time at a biological field station in Panama. Fire & Ice: Exploring Iceland will provide a more in-depth, hands-on look at the dynamic processes forming the island of Iceland and the native culture. We will explore active volcanoes, glaciers and other geomorphic features, taste local food and more. Key geologic activities include visits to active volcanoes and glaciers in two of Iceland’s National Parks and hikes to two waterfalls and a black pebble (volcanic) beach. CofC in Belgium and Netherlands: Finance (Spring Break)

FINC 360 is a semester long, interdisciplinary, study abroad course that requires students to financially analyze costs related to a publicly traded beer firm’ s logistics and supply chain processes. The course requires finance and other business school majors to work with global logistics minors over an entire semester to complete a financial analysis of a publicly traded firm in the brewing industry that relies heavily on shipping transportation. The highlight of the course is the study abroad component in the Netherlands and Belgium that introduces students to several Port Authority financial and logistics managers in addition to executives at institutions that provide external financing to global companies such as Heineken that use ship transportation for the flow of goods. University of Southern Mississippi (USM)

The British Studies Program, founded in 1976, is organized by Southern Miss through an academic consortium of colleges and universities. The program offers ten to fifteen different courses in various disciplines. Students will take one course and earn six credit hours through lectures taught by British scholars, artists, business leaders, and government officials, and through field excursions to various locations in and around London. On British Studies, London becomes the students’ classroom as they experience their subject first-hand and conduct research supervised by their professor.
